Insights, actionable tips, and philosophies for writers, creatives, and storytellers…

This week we got "fired" by one of our highest-paying ghostwriting clients.

(Which is just a dramatic way of saying he didn't renew for another month).

But this isn't some teary-eyed confession.

It's actually fantastic news.

To understand why losing a premium client has me smiling, you need to know the history here…

Real quick…

Now back to me getting fired lol.

Two Years, Two Agencies, Zero Results

I've known this client for about 2 years.

He joined my first Digital Identity cohort, where he quickly realized something:

He wanted the results of consistent content without writing a damn word himself.

Problem was, I had closed my ghostwriting agency at the time.

So what did he do?

Hired a massive agency run by one of the biggest names on X and LinkedIn.

And guess what happened?

Next to nothing.

He worked with them for almost a year.

The results?

  • Landed zero clients

  • Built no recognizable brand

  • Grew less than 3,000 followers

Most people would cut their losses. But not this guy.

He hired another agency.

Six months later?

Same disappointing story.

Let this sink in:

He paid agencies for roughly 18 months and got almost nothing in return.

❌ No clients
❌ No significant audience growth

(By the way, agency work is NOT cheap… I’m talking upwards of $5k/month)

I'm still stunned he didn't run away screaming from the entire ghostwriting industry.

Third Time's The Charm (We Thought)

By this point, word got around that we'd reopened our agency.

He reached out immediately to sign on.

This was high-stakes for us.

We couldn't be just another agency that took his money and delivered mediocrity.

We had to be the agency that finally turned his investment into actual results.

So we went all in:

  • Helped him dial in his sales coaching offer

  • Wrote content that aligned with the current LinkedIn meta

  • Built his authority in the sales niche instead of generic motivational quotes

Within 30 days of signing, he landed his FIRST paid sales coaching client.

(So proud of my team for this).

Over the next two months, leads were fairly consistent.

And his audience actually grew…

We helped him cross the 5,000 follower threshold – a major milestone for a smaller account.

Then out of nowhere, he told us he wasn't renewing.

What?

We were floored.

How could he stay with agencies that delivered nothing for 18 months, but bail on us after we'd finally gotten him results?

The Plot Twist I Never Expected

Here's why I'm actually thrilled he's leaving us:

One of his industry heroes saw his content.

The very content WE were writing.

And offered him his dream job – a lead consulting role at his dream company.

So right now he's putting all his energy there instead of growing his personal brand.

This isn't just a client churning.

This is a client succeeding beyond what either of us expected.

Let's be real…

Churn is inevitable when running a ghostwriting agency.

Clients come and go. It's part of the business.

But the absolute best-case scenario?

A client leaving because the content we crafted landed him his dream job.

That's not getting fired.

That's mission accomplished.
