If I could go back in time…
Back in January 2022, I started creating content online.
Those that see my 76,000 followers on Twitter,
And 17,000 on LinkedIn,
Might think I’ve always been into content.
But I actually never created content before Jan of 2022.
This made learning content from scratch f*cking hard!
All the conflicting advice online makes it damn right confusing.
⏃ Host spaces
⏃ Share personal stories
⏃ Copy what other top creators are doing
⏃ Pick a high profit niche to avoid wasting time
⏃ Put pineapple on your pizza
It’s all more confusing than compelling.
If I could go back in time 2 years, this is the secret SAOS - Surface Area of Success - I’d give my younger self, to get good at creating content (fast):
⏃ The Pareto Principle Applied to Content ⏃
80% of outputs come from 20% of inputs.
Meaning this:
There’s thousands of things you CAN do.
But only a handful of things you NEED to do.
The best content creators know what these few things are.
They master them.
And focus solely on them when creating.
Once I realized what they were I learned most content tips everyone’s giving are actually sh*t.
So what is this 20%?
Well, it’s any tip that relates to ‘attention.’
↳ The currency of the creator economy.
Your goal is to:
⏃ Capture
⏃ Connect
⏃ Convert
As much attention as possible.
Luck for you, the Top T - me - has you covered.
(That’s a joke btw)
⏃ Capturing Attention ⏃
The 3 principles of capturing attention:
Relevant (importance)
Desired outcome
Emotional pull
To put this in action:
Write a punchy conflict driven sentence ⇢
Create a curiosity loop ⇢
Present a novel idea that leads to an outcome your audience desires.
(Yes, it’s that simple. Take that, stupid hook writing tips).
2 hook writing frameworks you can combine to capture attention:
1) The Crunchy Curiosity Loop
[Punchy sentence]
[Open a curiosity loop]
Example ⇣
A top 1% creator called me out.
Here’s the 5 tips she gave me to get more followers:
2) Known problem + unknown solution
[Call out a known problem (pain point)]
[Present a novel solution]
Example ⇣
99% of people will never read your writing.
Unless you use the ‘Slip and Stick’ method:
(It’s funny - After I posted about the ‘Slip and Stick’ method, people started researching to find its origins. But I invented it. Cracks me up.)
⏃ Connection - Holding Attention ⏃
Connecting to your audience boils down to this.
⏃ Create emotional moments
⏃ Reinforce emotional moments with logic
5 ways to create emotional moments:
⇢ Story
⇢ Humor
⇢ Novelty
⇢ Nostalgia
⇢ Being their ‘Avatar of Hope’
You don’t have to use all of them.
I’m not funny.
↳ No matter how hard I try to be.
So I use storytelling, novel ideas, and nostalgia as my crutch.
They come more naturally to me.
Use what comes naturally to you.
Examples ⇣
Novelty ⇢ new framework, idea, or method
Humor ⇢ Jokes, playful writing styles, unexpected moments
Nostalgia ⇢ Using Toy Story, Star Wars, or Dr. Seuss as examples
Story ⇢ Relate a personal story to your audiences desired outcomes
Avatar of Hope ⇢ Be the guide that takes them on their hero’s journey (be Gandalf).
Reinforce emotional moments with logic
This ones more basic.
It comes down to ‘flipping the script.’
After key emotional moments, provide actionable advice your audience can use to implement it.
⇢ How-to lists
⇢ Step by step guides
⇢ Links to educational resources
Remember, your post has to be relevant to your audience.
Advice gives them something to take away.
But without an emotional moment to start, your advice fails to connect.
⏃ Converting Attention ⏃
Lastly, without converting the attention you grab, it will drift away like a sexy shower thought.
You’ll want to convert to:
⏃ Sales
⏃ Followers
⏃ Newsletter subs
⏃ Engagement - likes, shares, comments
The fastest way to get good at this is to study direct response marketing.
These 3 books have helped me the most:
⇢ On Advertising by Ogilvy
⇢ The Boron Letters by Halbert
⇢ The Adweek Copywriting Handbook by Sugarman
But I won’t play you like that.
Telling you to read thousands of pages before getting good won’t help you today.
So here’s 3 quick tips to convert attention:
⇢ Make actions easy with binary choices (share or comment)
⇢ Tell the audience what you’d like them to do (follow or subscribe)
⇢ Create offers so good people can’t help but desire them (bio, hooks)
The last point isn’t just about your products or service offerings.
Your brand and content are an offer as well.
↳ They attract attention, not money
There you have it my friend.
Nail these 3 principles to become a better creator than 99% of creators (not joking).
But lastly, I have a bonus pro tip for you.
When you get a tip from someone else, ask yourself which of these 3 buckets it belongs in.
Overtime, you’ll have plenty of tools for each.
Making you an extremely versatile creator.
